FAQ

Common questions

What does "top 3" mean on this map?
Google Maps shows three businesses in the Map Pack (the local box) for each search. A green dot means your business appears in those top 3 positions for that spot. Amber means you rank 4–10 and are in the extended results. Red means you're 11th or lower — or not appearing at all from that location.
Why does my rank change across the grid?
Google calculates Map Pack rankings based on proximity to the searcher. A business that ranks #1 in the city centre may not rank at all in a suburb 10 km away. The grid shows you that variance so you know which areas to improve — the work we cover in local SEO.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. The Map Rank Grid is completely free to use. No account required, no credit card, no catch. It uses live data so you always see your current position.
What if my city isn't in the list?
Most local businesses just pick their city from the dropdown. If you serve a town that isn't listed, click "Advanced" and paste exact coordinates. To find them, open Google Maps, right-click your town centre, click "What's here?", and copy the lat,lng pair that appears — it looks like 49.0504,−122.3045.
Which coverage area should I choose?
"My whole city" covers a radius roughly matching a typical municipality. "Just my neighbourhood" tightens the grid for hyperlocal trades like locksmiths and cleaners. "My city + nearby towns" is ideal for service-area businesses such as roofers or landscapers across the Fraser Valley. If you're local, see how we approach SEO in Abbotsford.
